How does DEET work?

Repellants containing DEET are proven to be highly effective, consistent insect repellants. Despite the substantial evidence shown in trials that DEET works, experts are still unsure of how exactly it does.

There are two main theories: one is that DEET contains chemical components which smell highly unpleasant to insects. The other theory is that DEET interrupts insects’ abilities to detect carbon-based substances in human breath, sweat, and bodily moisture, meaning DEET acts as a kind of cloaking device.

Is DEET Safe?

DEET was developed for use as an insect spray ingredient in the 1940s, and since then it has not been shown to have a link between any kind of major health complication. DEET has gone through countless toxicity testing and clinical trials for efficacy and hazards, all of which have resulted in strong evidence that DEET is a safe and reliable method to rid insects.
